About Singing for Seniors

Entering its 20th year of entertaining Naperville-area seniors, Singing for Seniors has become a "can't miss" tradition on the fall calendar. Each year, this toe-tapping, 90-minute musical review delights audiences with a wide range of established and up-and-coming talent from the Chicago area and across the country. As always, the concert is free and dedicated to thanking area seniors for their contributions to our community.

Singing for Seniors ConcertSinging for Seniors is currently held at Community Christian Church which, in addition to serving as an outstanding venue for the performance, offers easy access for seniors and handicapped individuals. No senior wishing to attend has ever been turned away. If transportation is an issue, an event volunteer will pick you up for the concert and return you home after the curtain closes.

It's a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon and the producers guarantee attendees will be home before dark and in time for dinner!

History of Singing for Seniors

After many years of volunteering throughout the Naperville community, Gary Leavenworth came to the conclusion that more could be Singing for Seniors Founder Gary Leavenworthdone for the senior citizens of our society. Gary’s love of music inspired him to create an afternoon of free entertainment called Singing For Seniors.

To reach this goal, a committee of volunteers was assembled and community leaders were enlisted. With help from the YMCA, insurance coverage was secured and businesses in the community generously provided sponsorship dollars to help defray costs. The City of Naperville has been one of these sponsors for the past four years through its Special Events and Cultural Amenities (SECA) fund. Because many seniors live on fixed incomes, presenting the entertainment at no cost has always been an important part of the Singing for Seniors mission. Many performers over the years have waived their fees in support of the cause.

Singing for Seniors AudienceToday performers vie for the opportunity to be a part of this special event. Another of Gary’s goals was to ensure that any senior in Naperville who wanted to attend Singing for Seniors would be able to do so -- no one would be turned away. To achieve this, the committee decided to offer free transportation to all seniors in need. With the help of additional volunteers, all who request transportation are given rides to and from the event.

To raise awareness, the committee orchestrates publicity efforts. They designed a logo to be identified with the event that can be seen in newspaper ads, the singingforseniors.org website and in mailings to nursing homes, churches and senior citizen organizations. The committee also reaches out to the Naperville community by dropping in on senior bingo games and nursing home lobbies to hand out flyers for the event.

At the start of the first annual concert Gary Leavenworth dedicated the event to the seniors in thanks for all that they have done for the rest of us over the years. He went on to express his intention to provide this event for seniors on an annual basis and looked forward to celebrating its 25th anniversary. This year the committee is actively planning the annual Singing For Seniors concert that is sure to be the best ever -- see you at the show!
